Eco Schools

The staff and students at the school care about the school and its surrounding environment.  Having achieved Eco Schools Silver standard, we are developing a range of projects and curriculum activities with our partners, such as Cummins Generator Technologies, which will enable it to achieve the top national award of Green Flag Status.

We have recently been successful in securing funding for a range of environmental improvements at the school, including poly-tunnels for growing our own fruit and vegetables, solar panels for generating hot water and a small wind turbine for generating electricity.

Our Eco council is made up of our students, who work to make our school a friendly environment as well as friendly to the environment.

  • Some of the work we have been doing this year
  • Enhancing our Eco-school status
  • Developing our recycling facilities
  • Designing Tutor quizzes
  • Planning assemblies
  • Researching  ways to be eco- friendly as individuals and as a school
  • Making suggestions on ways to improve our school

Sustainable Schools Showcase

The eco-council went  to the Sustainable Schools Showcase at Lincoln Showground. The bus trip there was eco friendly because we had one bus between lots of local schools so it reduced our carbon footprint.

There was loads to do and take part in, including

  • The Indian Experience
  • Recycled clothing- we made brooches from old jumpers
  • Recycled paper jewellery
  • Anglian water quizzes about saving water
  • Road safety , we rode a bike to power electric bulbs
  • Healthy cooked School meal, the ingredients were grown by the school too!
  • Fair trade - pineapple talk
  • Child line and many more.

Some of the activities you wouldn’t have thought were to do with being eco friendly were in a way because we could see how what we do impacts on others.

We watched some interesting presentations - our favourites were Bollywood dancing which taught us about different cultures, and painting our feet which made us think about carbon footprints.

We particularly liked the Green House made of Bottles (see picture on right).
