Student Support
SENCo/Assistant Headteacher for Special Educational Needs: Mrs K Wright
Assistant to the SENCo: Mrs J Lenton
The Learning Support department works closely with those young people with special educational needs, usually within the classroom but also through work in small groups outside lessons on particular areas such as spelling, reading, numeracy and communication skills.
We work with students with a wide range of special needs, including general learning problems, specific learning difficulties, and physical difficulties, as well as for those with emotional and behavioural difficulties. We work closely with the young people and their parents or carers to become independent learners and to take part in all aspects of school life.
Learning Support is situated in the centre of the school in Room 25. A break and lunch club takes place here every day so that our students can have access to a social space where they can meet and make friends. We also run a daily homework club in the library where TAs are able to offer help.
We also work very closely with the Student Support Centre, the Progress Managers and other support services to provide a good quality of provision for our young people.
A team of very professional Teaching Assistants (TAs) offer vital contribution to the support offered and work closely with the students, teachers and parents or carers to monitor the progress of individual education plans. (IEPs).
There is regular contact with primary schools and colleges throughout the year to ensure a smooth transfer into Year 7 and into Year 12.
