The Aims of the Mathematics Department
The Mathematics Department has the following aims:
Curriculum
Mathematics is a core subject. It is divided into two key stages – KS3 (11 – 14) and KS4 (15 – 16).
Each pupil has three hours of maths each week out of 25 hours
All pupils at KS3 work through their numeracy books during the morning registration on Tuesdays. They are worked through in blocked sessions alongside literacy. Each block is based on a half-term unit.
At KS4, the EDEXCEL 2381 Modular course is followed.
Course work does not count towards GCSE grades for mathematics – the grade is based on examination of the three modules:
Grades available at GCSE
Higher level grades D – A*
Foundation level grades G – C
Year 10 2009 – 2010
Sets 1 and 2 will be following a linear course in mathematics which means that they will take an exam which tests on all areas of work, no modules. This is a GCSE examination which will be taken in the summer term of 2010.
If grades achieved are in line with or above their predicted grade then an alternative course to mathematics, eg statistics, may be offered.
Pupils will have the opportunity to take the GCSE again if the result is not in line with their predicted level.
Homework
At KS3 pupils have one homework set per week.
At KS4 pupils have two homeworks set per week.
Pupils at KS4 have their own homework text book.
At KS3 most pupils have a homework text book, or will be given appropriate homework sheets.
We do not expect a pupil to spend more than the appropriate time allocated for their homework. However, some pupils work more slowly than others and may take a little longer. If there are problems, the following options are avaialable:
Equipment
Pupils are encouraged to have equipment which they can use at home and at school. This consists of:
Pen, pencil and ruler – this is standard equipment for all lessons
In addition – a scientific calculator. In school we use the Casio brand
A geometry set, to include a protractor and a compass
We also encourage pupils to have a Key Stage revision guide and these can be purchased from any good book shop.
There are many web sites which can be used to support the work we do in the mathematics department – type in the word mathematics, refine your search to a set topic and make your own choices.
