Students from Stamford Queen Eleanor were given a cooking master class this week to transform crops they had grown in the school garden, into a delicious three course meal, by a chef who featured on the BBC’s Great British Menu.
As soon as chef Thierry Daugeron, owner of Stamford Cookery School, heard about the dedication of twelve students growing their own vegetables during their lunch breaks and spare time he was keen to become involved.
The aim of the session was show the students how to prepare delicious family meals using fresh ingredients. The students began with stuffed peppers with couscous, carrots and squash followed by a tart of tomatoes and herbs served with green leaves and finished with strawberries dipped in chocolate. Using their newly built food technology room the students managed to cook all three courses to perfection in less than one hour.
Denise Taylor, organiser and co-owner of Stamford Chef School said: “the kids were fantastic to work with; they have dedicated so much of their time to growing this delicious produce and were delighted with the three courses they finished with. A few of them confessed to not being overly keen on actually eating vegetables, but our session showed how to use vegetables as part of a tasty family meal and both students and teachers alike enjoyed tasting the final dishes.
“As professionals, Thierry and I were also very impressed with the cooking facilities at the school which boasts a state-of-art food technology room with work stations for 16 children, the children really enjoyed cooking and it’s a great environment for them to develop their talent”.
